Internet security common methods

Internet security is a term that refers to the methods to protect data and information in the computer from unauthorized persons. It has become a serious issue in today's world. People using the internet should be well aware of the problems aroused due to it. The common methods used by the people to ensure information in the internet are:

Encryption of the data - Encryption of data deals with wrapping up the original information into an unintelligible form that can be decoded using a certain method. The encrypted form is called as cipher text.

Usages of passwords - Passwords are used to prevent illegal access of data so that the whole system is secure. Construction of passwords should be in a way that the other people do not easily guess it.

Methods - Several methods help in internet security. Some of them are listed below:

1. Firewalls; A firewall is a software that filters illegitimate access in network. It should have a proper configuration and has to be combined with proxy firewall for a secured system.

2. Taking Backup of data; Taking backup of the data from the system should be done regularly, at least the data that cannot be compensated. What if the computer suddenly crashes or the operation system failed to book due to virus attack, taking backup or data will reduce the consequences.

3. Preventing Virus Attack; computers may be affected by viruses, Trojan horse, worms etc due to some infected files downloaded from the internet. These viruses are nothing but programs that are installed by itself and run whenever the host programs run and cause malicious attack. The viruses either replicate or contain a buried function that affects the system files of the computer and leads to corruption of the operation system. Such viruses can be prevented by using anti virus software that detects and heals the virus in the system. These softwares run on the background along with the other programs and prevent the intrusion of malicious attacks.

4. Baleful Links; People can prevent their system from getting affected by the virus by avoiding unnecessary links and emails. Certain links may lead to download files unexpectedly. These pose a problem to the security of the computer and hence should be avoided.

5. File Sharing; During file sharing in the internet, pirated files also join with the original one and affect the speed of the computer. Hence, file sharing software should also be prevented.

6. Routers; Certain routers prevent connection from the outside to the computer but allow outward connections. Network Address Translation is software that has the former behaviour and it is of low cost and minimum complexity. Telitec include this as standard.

7. Preventing Spy-Ware; Several software forms a threat to the internet security. The software that runs along with other application without the permission of the user, gather information and send it to the software manufacturer through the internet. This is known as spy ware. Another soft ware called Ad-ware works similar to that of a spy ware. In addition, it pops up advertisement during internet access and increases the CPU cycles, slowing down the computer. Using antivirus and antivirus software alone will not prevent the intrusion of viruses. Personal caution is also required while using internet. Unwanted sites and attractive links have to be avoided. The antivirus software should be updated so that it is up to date. Hence, automatic updates should activated. All this will make the system free from threats.
